October was a blast! Literally. From the TKS hackathon to publishing my first article, there is a lot of interesting tea 🍵 to spill. Before I continue, I am Angelina Lim, a 17-year-old innovator at TKS (The Knowledge Society). I’m passionate about social change and helping others. 🤗
Exciting Events This Month 🎉
TKS Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hackathon 💻
The TKS AI hackathon was my first hackathon. I honestly had no idea what I was doing. All we were given was a prompt – to solve a problem with existing AI technology. This was honestly very challenging, and my team and I experienced so many challenges. Luckily, thanks to my teammates (shoutout to Erica Akene, Jalisha Yap, Maya Chandrashekaran), we overcame any setbacks we experienced. Together, we created SkinScanner, an app that detects skin cancer by studying pictures of your skin over a certain period of time.
Illuminate Universe NHLC Case Competition 💵
On October 24th, I attended the National High School Leadership Conference (NHLC) hosted by Illuminate Universe and sponsored by Deloitte and CPA Ontario. I was the only person from Vancouver who participated. This made scheduling tougher than I expected with my team. However, we were able to put together a schedule and assign each other tasks.
For this case competition, Deloitte gave us a case to solve the problem of low engagement with online learning. Since my team was familiar with slack, we decided to propose a school slack where students can connect with one another. The bot called “Donut” will pair them up with another student to help them set up a coffee chat on the slack.
My First Article! 📰
My first article is online! Based on a recent experience, I decided to write my first article on my toxic work relationship. It’s called, “5 Signs You Are Working With A Toxic Work Partner”. As you can already tell, I love helping others. So, I wrote my article in hopes that it might help someone identify an unhealthy work relationship.
❗ If you know me, I love to grow and improve! Feel free to contact me if you have any feedback!
Monthly Mindset 🧠
Done>perfect
You heard me. 😲 Done is better than perfect 😲
Have you ever pulled an all-nighter just so that you’re satisfied with the end result? Admit it. We’ve all been there. We work so hard just to be disappointed by a single mistake we did.
Just face it. Nothing is perfect unless you make it better. 😎
This is my favourite mindset so far. Why? This mindset is the first step to getting into a growth mindset. By accepting your failures, you can reflect on what you can do better and improve on it next time. This mindset has taught me to accept my mistakes and to just keep swimming (did you get the reference?).
Key Takeaways This Month 🔑
Be authentic. 😲 Plain and simple. Be yourself. Don’t let your insecurities hold you back. If you need to, talk to someone about it. Who knows? You might end up making a new best friend.
Keeping each other accountable and creating a positive workspace is key when working with one another. I find that this helps to motivate the team and keeps everyone on track.
🤗 Friends are amazing. They always have your back. As I mentioned above, have someone check in on you and keep you accountable, especially if you are working on a big project together.
Next Steps 👟
Starting my focus! A focus is a topic that TKS innovators explore by themselves. I plan on doing mine on Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality.
Braindates! This is TKS jargon for a 30-minute meeting. This can be a meet-up with someone new, or a conversation on a topic such as artificial intelligence.
Making a video or article on a topic I’m passionate about!
Whoops! Look’s like I’m out of tea! Come back next month for more!
This is Angelina, brewing the next pot!
